Το πρώτο Game Boy, που κυκλοφόρησε το 1989, ήταν μια πολιτιστική επιτυχία για τη Nintendo χάρη στη φιλοσοφία του σχεδιαστή Gunpei Yokoi, που βασιζόταν στη χρήση ώριμης και φθηνής τεχνολογίας, προσφέροντας έτσι χαμηλή τιμή, ανθεκτική κατασκευή και, κυρίως, τεράστια αυτονομία μπαταρίας (10-15 ώρες).
